If you are looking for the best place to learn handpan online, RewildYourSoul offers personal, one-on-one lessons for students in the US and internationally.

I’m Ricky Hillson, known online as Rewildyoursoul, a Massachusetts-based musician and teacher. I have 15 years of experience teaching Rav and Handpan, as well as a Masters Degree in Education.

My handpan and RAV lessons focus on songs, practical technique, and composition, with guidance shaped around your instrument and musical interests.

Many of my students have gone on to be influential players, recording artists and teachers around the world.

Hello my Friends!

Choosing where to learn handpan can feel a little overwhelming. There are video courses, YouTube tutorials, private teachers, and plenty of different approaches. You might be completely new, or you might already play but feel unsure how to move beyond the same few patterns.

I want to help you make music you enjoy and understand how to keep developing it. Here is what learning with me at RewildYourSoul looks like, and how to decide whether it is a good fit for you.

Learn handpan through real songs

My lessons are built around making music. We can work on a song, a short musical phrase, or a composition of your own, developing the techniques needed along the way.

For example, if a song involves moving between two notes with alternating hands, we can break down that movement and put it back into the phrase. You hear why you are practicing it and how it helps the music.

You do not need to understand music theory before beginning. We can start with listening, demonstration, rhythm, and the layout of your instrument. Musical ideas become easier to explore when you can hear them in something you are playing.

If learning through songs appeals to you, that is a strong reason to consider RewildYourSoul.

Get feedback on your own playing

Free tutorials and prerecorded courses can give you plenty to explore. One-on-one lessons add a conversation about what happens when you try those ideas yourself.

You can show me the phrase that keeps falling apart, ask about a note that is difficult to sound clearly, or bring a piece you have started writing. We can slow down, adjust the explanation, and focus on the part that needs attention.

The lesson can respond to you. A beginner may need help with a comfortable strike and a steady pulse. Someone with more experience may want to develop variations, connect sections, or create a more deliberate ending.

That personal attention is central to how I teach.

Work with the handpan you already own

Different handpan scales and layouts offer different musical possibilities. Before choosing learning material, it helps to know whether the notes used in a demonstration are available on your instrument.

In a private lesson, we can work with your layout and choose material that makes sense for it. If you have a particular song in mind, we can discuss whether it fits your notes or needs adapting.

You do not need to purchase another handpan simply to begin learning with me. Let me know your scale and note layout when you get in touch. If you are unsure what you have, send a photo or the instrument’s original listing.

Develop your own handpan music

Learning a piece can also lead toward writing one.

We might take a rhythm you already know, move it between a few notes, and listen for a melody. From there, we can explore a variation, create a second section, and find a way to bring the music to a close.

Composition gives your practice a purpose. It also gives you something personal to return to as your skills grow. A simple piece can become more expressive through timing, dynamics, and space, without needing to become faster or more complicated.

This is an important part of my approach: helping you use the handpan as a songwriting instrument and develop ideas of your own.

Online handpan lessons for US and international students

I am based in Massachusetts, USA, and teach students in the US and internationally through Zoom. My work includes composing, performing, teaching, and leading workshops within the handpan and RAV community.

Whether you are in the United States or another country, online lessons let us work together from your own space, using your own instrument. Check the booking calendar for current appointment availability.

For the session, choose a quiet place and position your camera so I can see your hands and the instrument. We can take turns demonstrating and playing short sections, with time for questions and feedback.

Handpan and RAV lessons in one place

I also teach RAV Vast, RAV Moon, and RAV Anima. If you play one of these instruments, or move between handpan and RAV, we can focus on the technique and musical possibilities of the instrument in front of you.

The same teaching principle applies: learn through music, notice what needs work, and build from there. Your goals might include clearer tone, stronger rhythm, learning songs, or developing your own compositions.

Is RewildYourSoul the right place for you?

My lessons are a good fit if you want:

  • A teacher you can speak with and ask questions directly.

  • Song-based learning with technique explained in context.

  • Guidance for your particular handpan or RAV.

  • An approachable starting point without a music-theory prerequisite.

  • Help developing melodies, arrangements, and original compositions.

If your priority is a large collection of videos to work through independently, a prerecorded course may suit that goal. You can also combine independent study with private lessons when you want feedback or a clearer direction.

The best choice should match how you like to learn and the support you want. A short lesson together can help you make that decision through experience.

Try a free handpan or RAV intro lesson

I offer a free 30-minute introductory lesson so we can meet, discuss your instrument, and explore what you would like to learn. You can ask questions and experience my teaching approach before deciding about ongoing lessons.

You do not need to prepare an impressive performance. Bring where you are right now, whether that means your first few notes or a piece you have been working on for months.

Remember, Rewildyoursoul.
